Panel 1: 20 years since the IPCC Special Report on CCS: a discussion with authors of review papers on CO₂ capture, transport and storage from the upcoming IJGGC Special Issue

Twenty years after the IPCC Special Report on Carbon Capture and Storage, CCS has moved from a largely emerging technology towards commercial deployment across multiple sectors and regions. This Special Issue brings together leading international research groups to provide critical reviews of advances across carbon capture, removals, use, and storage over the past decade.

In this panel, authors of the review papers will summarise their key findings and take part in a moderated discussion led by the Special Issue Editors, Sarah Gasda and Matteo Romano. The discussion will reflect on what has changed, where substantial progress has been made, and what technical, economic, regulatory, and societal challenges remain as CCS scales towards climate-relevant deployment.

Panel 2: CCS at the Crossroads: Balancing Ambitious Targets, Energy Security, and Cost

Over the past few years, it has grown increasingly difficult to envision the world meeting the 1.5 degree target set by the Paris agreement. In this time, concerns about energy security and economic growth have once again come to the fore, pushing climate (and other environmental issues) down the agenda. This has implications for the pace and the way in which energy technologies and CCS will be deployed.

• Are CCS projects progressing at the pace required to meet ambitious climate goals?
• Has the recent geopolitical context strengthened or diluted CCS momentum? E.g. energy security and climate policy.
• Are current cost levels and incentives sufficient to sustain scale-up?
• Are priorities and deployment pathways increasingly fragmented across regions?

Panel 3: Unlocking CDR: What’s holding back scale?

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) offers a pathway to enable Australia and the world to meet net-zero targets, but scaling it remains a challenge. This panel explores the barriers slowing CDR deployment, from technological, economic, and regulatory hurdles to workforce and infrastructure constraints, and discusses what is urgently needed to unlock the sector’s full potential.

Panel 4: ‘Share-a-thon’ Public outreach materials and content

Public understanding of the need for carbon management, and the role it plays, remains limited. This knowledge gap leaves room for accidental or deliberate misinformation to spread.

This interactive session will showcase the ‘best in class’ examples of materials used to communicate essential concepts to the public.

Panel 5: Global CO₂ Storage – Current needs, future requirements

Large-scale storage capacity has been a contentious topic since the beginning of CCS. This panel will reflect on the methods and current needs for this type of national and global data and inventory

• What is the current need for national and global capacity estimates?
• How they are used (which may/may not be aligned with the purpose for which they are designed)
• Options in capacity assessment methods and how the selection of methods impacts the usefulness.
• Is this still the right question to be asking? Does the current state of the industry suggest a different framing?

Panel 6: Role of insurance in facilitating CCS scale-up

The insurance sector looks at the CCS industry through a particular risk framework. Typical risk categories include 1) financial, 2) technical, 3) safety and operational, 4) regulatory and 5) integration or cross-chain risks.

This panel will discuss the role that the insurance industry has in risk management for carbon management projects: opportunities, the industry’s challenges and today’s and tomorrow’s insurance solutions. We will also discuss the role that government policy has in facilitating insurability of CCS. The panel will cover the current situation in CCS insurability as well as key future developments expected.

In this panel, we will hear from senior executives from the insurance sector, CCS industry as well as government / public sector.
